The powerful nature of birth is a life changing experience serving as a beautiful gateway to parenthood. Together, we will explore
the use of interventions such as pain medications as an option as well as the skills necessary to give birth naturally with joy and confidence. Each class includes a time to practice Relaxation, Prenatal Bonding, Visualization, Massage, Breathing and a variety
of helpful positions, as well as beautiful and empowering films of birth, breastfeeding and parenting.
Sample Schedule
Week #1
The couple will learn excellent nutrition, exercise specific to labor and good communication skills which are the necessary birth tools and optimal foundations for a healthy family. Additionally,Dads will come away form this class with a good understanding of the critical importance of their role.
Week #2
Couples will discover methods which will create an environment conducive to a safe and positive birth experience. We will further discuss what to expect from late pregnancy and early labor.
Week #3
We will move into the most challenging aspects of labor learning techniques and positions to cope with the power and intensity of labor as well as how to reframe and invite contractions to welcome your baby.
Week #4
We will discuss the topic “when things don't go as planned." We will review the most commonly used interventions including the pros and cons of pain relief methods, how to thoughtfully make
decisions with the help of your caregivers and how to avoid the domino effect of birth interventions.
Week #5
The focus will be on your precious newborn with information to help you fully take advantage of those first hours, days and weeks of your baby's life. We will talk about how to establish a good
breastfeeding relationship, wearing your baby, sleep strategies, and attachment parenting.
Week #6
We will look at the science and practical aspects of breastfeeding. Kitty Maxwell, internationally acclaimed breastfeeding expert and local hero, will walk you through a whirlwind tour of every
thing the new parents need to know for successful breastfeeding.
Week #7
Features Renowned Midwife Mary Jackson and her wonderful techniques for bonding and sharing with your baby both prenatally and at birth.
Week #8
A joyful reunion when we have an opportunity to share our birth stories and to learn about our amazing newborns. We will also discuss common challenges and share the joys of the early
postpartum period.
About the Instructor
Natural Childbirth Educator Tracy Schmidt is an experienced Childbirth Educator, Doula, mother of 5 and grandmother of fourteen. She has been teaching prenatal and postpartum programs on the Santa Barbara are for over 35years and has worked with more than 3,500 families.
